"Diabetes education empowers the patient!"
It is a general belief among the diabetes patients that diabetes management mainly involves taking medicines/ insulin as prescribed by the Doctor. Managing Diabetes is more than just popping pills and injecting insulin. It is a lifestyle disorder that must be managed on a daily basis and this requires lifelong commitment. Diabetes mellitus unlike acute illnesses like fever, cold and cough, requires patient involvement in the disease management. Being a chronic illness which has no cure so far, Diabetes mellitus could be managed only if the patient is well-informed and willing to take the responsibility of his health. Diet and lifestyle modification are equally important in controlling Diabetes mellitus. A comprehensive diabetes management plan involves diet, drug and lifestyle management alongwith a knowledge of self-care behaviors that facilitate better diabetes control. It is never too late to take charge of your diabetes and one must be an active participant in the learning process. As a Diabetes patient, the more you learn about diabetes, the better your diabetes will be in control.
Behavioural modification needs time and persistent effort from the patient's end. This can be successfully achieved, if a patient with the support of a healthcare provider (diabetes counselor), learns skills required for self-care management. Hence, the first step towards diabetes management is the need to realise the seriousness of the disease. Well-controlled diabetes not only leads to a reduced risk of complications arising from high blood sugar but also improves the quality of life as well as the general well-being of the patient.
